Lawrence McBrearty was elected Canadian National Director in 1993.
He had been appointed District 5 director by the International Executive
Board in June, 1991. He is a member and former president of Local 6086
at Noranda Mines in Murcochville, Que., which he helped organize in the
early 1960s. He joined the Steelworkers staff in 1974, and was
sub-district director of the Atlantic Provinces from 1984 to 1987. He
chairs the 1996 Convention Officers' Report Committee. As a director, he
is president of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, union co-chair of the
Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress, vice president of the
Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), a member of the Executive of the
Canadian Labour Market and Productivity Centre and co-chair of the
Mining Industry Training and Adjustment Council.
